About
Jim Malone, AIA, CDT
has been a practicing architect and urban designer for twenty years. His work represents projects at all scales, design phases, and typologies coupled with a design focus that emphasizes the interplay between the public and private realms.
Jim’s understanding of complex urban design and urban infill issues inspires his focus on both site design and the building façade, the threshold where public and private intersect. He is passionate about vibrant public-space-oriented architecture that fosters community and increases social awareness. Jim is also always conscious of the built environment’s sociological impact; its potential to help us lead more creative, connected, and fulfilling lives. His design process is innovative, concept driven, and context sensitive.
Jim was born in Washington DC in 1982 and grew up in Annapolis, MD, the son of a forensic civil engineer and a professor of political science. He studied architecture and urban design at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC from 2001 through 2005. His graduate studies at CUA were conducted under Terrance Williams, a protege of urban design master Colin Rowe. Jim’s academic work was supplemented by thoughtful observation and analysis of the urban laboratory of Washington, DC during its renaissance from 2001 through 2021.
Following graduation Jim spent his formative professional years at Washington, DC firm Cunningham Quill Architects. While at CQA he played a key role on projects that ran the spectrum of built environment typologies and scales including master planning, multi-family housing, affordable housing, adaptive reuse, historic preservation, institutional, and single-family. Jim then relocated to the DC office of Antunovich Associates where he honed his skills in construction administration and project management while working on a one million square foot adaptive reuse multi-family project.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic Jim spent a brief stint with DC firm StudioMB working on the schematic design phase for a high profile 250-unit mixed-use infill development adjacent to Audi Field in DC before relocating with family to Pittsburgh, PA in mid-2021. There he worked for two years with PWWG Architects before relocating to Strada Architecture.
As an avid graphic illustrator Jim is comfortable depicting design ideas via both sketching and computer-aided media throughout the design process. Outside the architecture office Jim enjoys documenting the built environment through photography and seeing the world through the eyes of his 6-year-old daughter. He also draws inspiration from the performing arts, astronomy, exponential technology, social media, and urban culture.
Jim is a Registered Architect in Washington, DC and Pennsylvania, a member of the American Institute of Architects, and a certified Construction Documents Technologist with the Construction Specifications Institute. He holds a Masters Degree in Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the Catholic University of America School of Architecture.
